Mens 1 Apollo v Faversham
Tonight it was the turn of mens 1 to start their season facing newly promoted Faversham. Having watched them last season against our mens 2 I remember saying mens 1 would struggle against them. Once again injuries and work commitments meant we fielded a team quite different to that expected.
First up was captain Rob Jones and Jordan Reed Ashton (making his debut for us tonight). A new pairing but they proved their worth and won 2 of their 3 games. Jordan's serve setting up many chances that Rob took advantage of.
Alan Coulthart stepped up into the team to partner Graeme Solly. They narrowly lost their opening game despite going to 3 ends and 2 tie breaks so really couldn't of been closer.
"That man" Colin Sherwood was seconded into the mens team partnering Michael 'Gappy' Myles . Winning their first 2 games both in 2 ends, both players experience selecting the right shots at the right time. With the match at 4-3 in our favour we faced the Faversham number one pairing of Jordan Dadd and D Woodcock and started well winning the first end 21-13, then the opponents rallied coming back 22-24 taking us into a deciding game. There was never more than a 2 point gap all the way through, the difference being the Faversham pairing tightening up and not making the mistakes they did earlier to win 18-21.
So now eyes turned to the result of Alan Allan Colthart and Graeme Sollys last game. Despite their performances they hadn't managed a win- but saved their best until last. The variety of their play overcoming their opponents 21-10 21-13 in the crucial game that tipped the balance to Apollo winning 5-4.
Maybe we should feel for the Dadd/Woodcock pairing who won all 3 of their games but ended up on the losing side. However, I'm sure the friendly Faversham team will allow us to relish in a victorious start to our season with a make shift team in a match enjoyed by all.
